This small building was here at least by 1872 when its footprint is shown on a map of the Village. This house and the one to the west were both a part of Lot 1 Block 8. The lot was sold to Washington L. Clark by his father Jeremiah III in 1845 for $1600.00. This was just one of the lots W. L. Clark owned. By 1850 he also owned Lot 10 Block 1, the northeast corner of S. Main and E. Church Streets. Clark died in 1854, when he was 36 years old. The assessed value for this site, Lot 1 Block 8, was $75 in 1850. The value is low, but it is high enough to suggest that there may have been a small building on the lot then. Taylor H. Stewart probably built this building or added to the earlier one between 1864 and 1869. Architecturally, this was probably a simple Greek Revival style building originally. It has the low pitched roof typical of that style. The brick chimney is probably a later addition. Asbestos siding which simulates wood shingles covers the original wood clapboard. Recently the house underwent renovation.
