69 East Washington St.

North side of street

The original section of this house was built about 1858 in the Greek Revival style.

Like most of Clarkston's earliest buildings with an architectural style, this house, built circa 1858 for/by O. C. Bettis, was originally a Midwestern adaptation of the Greek Revival style. The footprint of the house seen of the 1872 map of the Village is consistent with the one & 1/2 story with a single story wing typical of the style. While the house has seen additions and alterations, the original broken pediment of the entablature, under the gently pitched gable roof of the story and 1/2 street facing section, is still visible. Asbestos shingle siding covers the original wood clapboard. The attached garage, rear porch and family room and a chimney of the west facade are additions. The front door (or in some instances, front doors) of small houses, built in the Village in the same period, opened directly into the room. Part of the front porch of this house has been enclosed to provide an anteroom or foyer.
