Clark, Lee Milton

  • Born 1881 in his grandmother Elizabeth Ann Vliet's house, 11 S. Holcomb. Died 12/5/1975. Son of Edwin. Grandson of Milton Clark.
  • In 1907 Lee married Bertha Hadley (Born 1883. Died 1/7/1955).
  • Children: Milton Hadley; Nelson Lee; Virginia, Mrs. E. A. Owen; Isabel; & Arthur Edwin.
  • Lee's father, Edwin Clark started the Phoenix Ironworks in Detroit. He & Lee moved the business to Clarkston in 1915 changing the name to Vulcan Art Metal Works. Lee designed a metal gate for the entrance to Lakeview Cemetery as a memorial to the area's pioneers, (see photo, page 76 ) & the metal plaque on the stone in front of the Independence Township Hall. Father & son built the fieldstone building at 64/66 S. Main in 1915 on the site of a wood house owned by Alex Young a jeweler/watchmaker. This house was moved back on the lot with the front facing Waldon Rd. Lee remodeled this small wood house & made it his home. The house was later moved to Sashabaw Rd. In 1937, Lee reentered the insurance field as an agent for Guarantee Mutual Life Co. with an office in his residence at 38 N. Holcomb. He began a weekly paper, The Community News in the 1920s, printed Clarkston's first picture postcards & was active in organizing entertainment for the Opera House on the second floor or the Maccabee Temple, S.
