Owner of the hotel, the Demerest House, built circa 1872 on the northwest corner of W. Washington & N. Main Streets. The proprietors for a time were Mr. & Mrs. William Stoors. After several owner & name changes (which included The Demerest House, the Clarkston House, the Nelson House, the New Wooster), the hotel became the Caribou Inn.
1860 census records listed Samuel"Demeress", a 49 year old farmer, born in N.J.; Amanda, his 34 year old wife, born in N.Y.; Sarah, 12 years old; Mary, 8 years old; and Ann, 5 years old. All three girls were born in Michigan.
