Historically, 1858 tax record assessed values indicate there was a building on this lot by then. The owner at the time was Mariah Sabine. There are no photos or verbal descriptions of this early building at this time. The 1872 Map of the Village shows a building in the middle of the lot (11) close to Main St., owner A. (Alexander) Young. Young was a jeweler. In 1915, the site became the home of Vulcan Art Metal Works, the business of Edwin M. Clark and son, Lee Clark. The business was moved from Detroit to Clarkston. (See Vulcan Metalworks Catalogs in the collection of the Clarkston Community Historical Society). Vulcan constructed the metal gates for Lakeview Cemetery in the 1920s. Oral history reports a small house once stood behind the main plant facing Waldon Rd. This was the residence of Lee Clark for a time. The house was moved in the 1950s to a site on Sashabaw Rd. Since the demise of Vulcan in 1941 the building has served several manufacturing and commercial purposes, becoming Tierra Arts and Design in the late 1980s.
