This structure of locally produced rusticated concrete block was built in 1914 for use as the Independence Township Hall.
This rusticated block building was constructed in 1914, for use as the Independence Township Hall. J. D. Ogden and Austin Taylor (residents of the houses at 155 & 135 N. Main, respectively) acted as the building committee. Slaters of Pontiac, Michigan constructed the building of locally produced concrete block which was also used for the construction of 27 South Main. At least one wooden building occupied this site prior to the construction of this building. According to a photo caption in Heritage, page 58, Dr. Clark Sutherland's first home in the Village was at the back of lot of 21 S. Main (see Heritage photo of ice storm.) After the present building was constructed Village Council meetings and elections, for a time, were held here. The building became the Clarkston U. S. Post Office in 1942. A 1958 Clarkston News article announced the retirement of postal clerks, Mrs. Clarence Drake & Miss Ada Scrace. The Post Office sold the building after it constructed a new facility on M - 15 in 1976, outside the Village limits. The building has been used for offices since. The street facade was remodeled in the late 1970s. An addition to the west facade was begun in 1998.

Partial Post Office History:
The following information regarding the Clarkston Post Office was compiled from a variety of sources including three Clarkston News articles, 8/3/1967, 8/17/1967 and 8/31/1967, by Constance Lektzian. The United States Post Office has been contacted to verify & update the information. The list will be corrected after receipt of that information. 1840 Ebenezer Clark, Postmaster, with an office is the Village. 1846 Jeremiah Clark III, Postmaster. 1850 Nelson W. Clark, followed by Milton Clark, then William Axford. 1861 Ashley Rathbun, Postmaster. The office was than located on the east side of Main Street south of the stream. 1869 Nelson Abbey, Postmaster. 1870 -1877 According to one source Guy Seldon was Postmaster followed by his daughter, Sarah P. Selden, Postmistress. However, Constance Lektizian listed Pheobe Abbey as Postmistress in 1873, serving for about nine years. 1881 - 1882 George W. King - David Green John H. Dresser served for four years 1896 Leroy N. Brown, at the time the office was on the east side of Main St. south of the stream. 1900 John Smith, postmaster when the office was in the Clarkston Association Building Association/Maccabee building, 4, 6, 8 S. Main. 1916 Charles Meyers, Postmaster, office, 3 E. Washington. 1924-1936, Floyd Andrews, Postmaster, office, 21 S. Main. Andrews became Independence Township Supervisor in 1936. 1936-1970 Elizabeth (Mrs. John) Ronk, Postmistress.
