44 East Washington St.

South side of street

The original section of this house was built about 1914.

This property, with that of 38 E.Washington, were part of the property of the house at 7 Buffalo Street until about 1914 when tax records listed Miss Sarah V. Selden for the east 40 feet of Lot 2 and the west half of Lot 3, the site of this house. Miss Selden was Clarkston's Postmistress in 1870. While this house was apparently built for Miss Selden it was long known as the home of LeRoy and Margaret Addis. Mr. Addis, like his father before him, was the owner/proprietor of a store, the Addis soda shop and candy store on the southeast corner of South Main and East Washington Streets, 2 South Main. Architecturally it is a Vernacular Style house with original woodwork on the interior. A two story addition was constructed to the rear facade of the house in 1978. Aluminum siding covers the original wood clapboard.
